Abstract [en]

Drawing on fieldwork in Cape Town, this essay moves transversally across different settings—situated assemblages made up of enunciations, actions, and codes—in order to explore “that which holds a society together”, which is the institution in the broadest sense. Confronted with the violence of inequality produced and maintained by enduring spatial structures, complexity, hybridity, and ambiguity come across as signs of hope. The main case brought up in this essay—the Edith Stephens nature reserve in Phillippi on the Cape Flats—is put forward as a promise for the future, whose ambiguous borders and oblique rationality provide means to “stay with the trouble” in starkly impoverished surroundings. It discloses the emergence of a “minor architecture” that, in taking its material from the alleged margins, differs from previous readings.

Abstract [en]

This introduction to "Solids and Flows: Architecture and Capitalism" provides a context to the articles assembled in this issue, and reflects on the implications of what can be perceived as a common approach. Drawing on Nancy Fraser's "expanded conception of capitalism" combined with Isabelle Stengers' advocacy for "resisting the coming barbarism," we offer a framework for thinking architecture's relationship to capitalism that goes beyond the spheres of property and market, and places emphasis on our capacity to move across the categories. It seems that in view of "the social institutionalisation" of capitalism, and confronted with the neoliberal market set up as "thinking machine," there is no simple return to the analysis and strategies established in the past. Rather, it becomes a matter of " learning from now on" with an acute attention to detail of the various assemblages in which architecture now operates.

Abstract [en]

Uses the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari to interrogate what cities can do

Defining the lives of a majority of the world’s population, the question of ‘the city’ has risen to the fore as one the most urgent issues of our time – uniting concerns across the terrain of climate policies, global financing, localised struggles and multi-disciplinary research.

Deleuze and the City rests on a conviction that philosophy is crucially important for advancing knowledge on cities, and for allowing us to envisage new forms of urban life toward a more sustainable future. It gathers some of the most original thinkers and accomplished scholars in contemporary urban studies, showing how Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophical project is essential for our thinking through the multi-scalar, uneven and contested landscapes that constitute ‘the city’ today.

Dispelling the old question of what the city is, this collection provides a nuanced mapping of situations emerging in concrete urban settings across the globe, ranging from the ‘laboratory urbanism' of an Austrian ski resort and a ‘sustainable’ Swedish shopping mall to the ‘urbicidal’ refurbishments of Haifa.
