Foundation with timber piles (English)
Abstract [en]

The construction and real estate sector is responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, which drives the industry to seek sustainable solutions to reduce its environmental impact. With the goal of halving global emissions by 2030, it is crucial to develop and implement eco-friendly solutions.Timber piles have been used in foundation construction for hundreds of years, but their use has decreased with the development of other pile materials. Currently, timber piles account for 4 percent of the total installed pile meters in Sweden. Due to increased awareness of climate impact, a return to timber piles is becoming interesting as a affordable and climate-smart solution. This requires that timber piles are suitable for the load conditions and the geotechnical conditions. The purpose of this study is to examine how timber piles can be used more widely in foundation construction. Through a literature review, interviews, and a case study, an analysis of the current state of foundation construction with timber piles is created. The interview study indicates that there is interest from the interviewed stakeholders to use timber piles when appropriate and they view increased use positively. Timber piles are sometimes dismissed at an early stage, and supporting documentation would be needed to promote and increase confidence in the use of timber piles within the industry. The case study, including a carbon cost analysis, shows that timber piles result in lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to concrete piles and that the monetary cost is also lower. Finally, it is noted that timber piles are mainly used in temporary foundation constructions today, but with supporting documents and increased experience, there is potential for wider use in the future.
