Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

This bachelor thesis will focus on how to utilize the school´s most important resource, the teacher. Information presented in this thesis contains two kinds of parts.

Production theory common in the industry are presented and an attempt to translate the theory on the environment of the school is done. The second part of the rapport concerns an empirical study were teachers has been interviewed and pupils answered a survey. High school´s in Stockholm, Västerås and Umeå has been the platform for the empirical study.

Industrial production takes advantage of production theory to become more efficient and reduce the use of resources. Lean which is the most common concept in resource efficiency consists of a couple of models. To optimize an organization a value stream mapping can be used to identify activities that doesn´t contribute with any value. To minimize waste which liberates funds of money or time the tool seven types of waste and unutilized creativity can be used. The last tool described is 5S that enables the company to create and maintain order in the workplace.

The empirical study has been executed in two steps. 141 pupils has answered the survey about the pupil´s experience about the education, what they think about the teacher´s work and their own level of motivation. Seven teachers at three different schools has been interviewed. To increase the probability of differentiated responses and cover a more complete picture of the teacher’s opinions, schools were selected in different geographical areas. Pupil´s level of motivation are described as too low throughout the interviews. Meetings with work- and subject teams are considered as stimulating and important. They could however be utilized in a more efficient way if irrelevant discussions were removed. The teachers do not appreciate the concept of whole days being used for planning. Discussions are often carried out on a general level which makes it hard to implement the results. There is no time for teachers to recover between lessons because other assignments need their attention.

Questions in the survey covered the pupil’s attention on the lectures, if they considered the teachers well prepared and if they studied on their free time. 53 % of the pupils stated that they listened to the lectures and 46 % that they didn´t listen. The most common response to why pupils listened to the lectures were that they learned by doing so, that they liked the subject or that they thought the lectures were interesting. Pupils that did not listen to the lectures could be divided in to two larger groups. A majority of the pupils lacked motivation, interest or concentration because of distractions. The other group of pupils did already understand the topic of the lecture. A vast majority, 89 %, considered the teachers to be well prepared for the lectures. The habit of conducting studies outside school scheduled time could be divided in to four categories (study at home, do not study at home, only pre exam studies and occasionally).

In the bachelor thesis the presented material is analysed and suggestions for improvements are done. In the analyse we come to the conclusion that the teachers work tasks needs to become more efficient to utilize the teacher ability in a more efficient way. We have managed to apply production theories on different work tasks that the teacher perform on a daily basis by comparing theory with data from the empirical study. The next step is to implement suggested ideas of improvement in practise to determine the outcome.
