Abstract [en]

There are several established reasons why an organization chooses to launch a spin-out.Innovation and the need for new processes and values are two of those reasons. Although spinoutsmay solve a mismatch in ways of working, it also introduces a complex relationshipbetween spin-out and parent organization. Corporate culture and development processes aretwo of the things included in the inheritance that may follow from a parent organization to itsspin-out. The purpose of this thesis was to explore the role of inheritence in the spin-outprocess and investigate how a spin-out organization’s culture and processes is affected bythose of its parent organization. The analysis of the two case companies suggests aninheritance from the parent organization to the spin-out. This inheritance and the element ofcontrol over the spin-out, that it gives the parent organization, further causes an ambiguitywithin the spin-out’s culture and processes. An ambiguity that represents a mismatch betweenhow the spin-out wants to work and what the inheritance causes it to do instead. The thesisutilizes existing literature and empirical findings to highlight the importance of management andleadership. The thesis further discusses management’s ability to, together with the rest of theorganization, mitigate said ambiguities and continue to develop the spin-out’s own identity, culture and processes.
