Abstract [en]

HOW TO CARE FOR THE MODERNIST HOUSING BUILDINGS OF BUDAPEST THAT HAS BEEN BUILT BETWEEN 1949 AND 1989?

In my diploma project I was researching the past of Budapest's prefabricated concrete buildings/housing estates, that were built in the time of the Hungarian People’s Republic (Magyar Népköztársaság 1949-1989), Communism. These buildings are part of the quite recent past, why they might not be in the focus of cultural heritage management yet. At the same time, not only the buildings’ vicinity in time is the only factor that might influence their present and future, but the divisive era that they are associated with. I am researching the historical and political factors that led to the birth of such a project as the Hauszmann Program, where the Hungarian government is regenerating a whole neighbourhood with a reminiscence of buildings that have been standing there before the war, completely made out of concrete. My aim was to study the architectural heritage and the problems that arose in the past 50 years, in order to understand the ways of architectural conservation (Preserve / Renovate) and to point out their potentials and values for a better certainty of their future in a time and era where their future is questionable. As a conclusion of the research I chose one of the prefabricated panel buildings and proposed a renovation strategy, where I tackle the issues with the internal layout and solving the building's issue with energy performance, by using CLT as an additional facade element, keeping parts of the original facade in order to keep the building's initial characteristic.
