Abstract [en]

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are spreading all around the world with impressive speed. They replace traditional wired networks in many cases, such as in large systems like airports and hospitals. Designed for single Access Point (AP) network, IEEE 802.11 access mechanism limits system performances when APs coverage overlap. The problem of AP placement thus becomes crucial for large systems. New models have therefore appeared in the attempt to provide WLAN coverage planning. Here we propose a genetic algorithm that leads to a performance optimization, and hence gives a planning solution. We present and discuss different planning problems that maximize either overall capacity or single-end user capacity, and give some simulations for those cases.
