Abstract [en]

All companies in today’s complex business world are concerned with change. IT companies are changing the way they develop products by abandoning old development process in favor for new ones that better fit in their fast changing business. These new processes go under the name agile software development and can benefit the business by minimizing up front design and allowing developers to work in a iterative matter, continuously revisiting and updating requirements in pace with the changing environment. The literature revolving agile software development is vast but little research is made regarding what change approach should be taken by the organization in order to successfully adopt agile methods. This thesis analyses two cases, looking at teams from Scania IT and the Radio PDU at Ericsson that have been successful in their agile adoption. The AAIM framework for agile adoption is used to be able to determine in which phase of the adoption a certain change approach was applied.

The thesis concludes by stating that a combination of planned and emergent change is preferable when introducing agile software development. The thesis builds upon the AAIM framework to include whether a planned or an emergent change approach should be utilized at each level of the framework. This is done in terms of developing an approach for agile adoption that the researchers believe could be applied outside of the studied cases.
