Abstract [en]

The emerge of thin film solar cells like CIGS solar cells can make solar power one of the

main sources of renewable energy in the near future. The main reasons for the high focus on

CIGS solar cells are its benefits of low cost, large area deposition of thin layers and high

efficiency, comparable with silicon based solar cells. But one of the main problems with

CIGS solar cells is the CdS buffer layer and the toxic hazards with its production. ZnS is one

of the most promising materials due to its similarity with CdS and the possibility to use the

same deposition process used in producing CdS, chemical bath deposition (CBD).

The main purpose of this work is to find a process for chemical bath deposition of ZnS

adaptable to TCTechs base line process.

The experiments with Zn/TEA ratios gave the highest productivity of the solar cells where the

best cell had a max product higher than baseline CdS. SEM/EDS analyses helped proving the

formation of ZnS with this setup of CBD deposition. The formation of ZnS was driven by

TEA which helped forming the complex ion [Zn(NH3)3]2+ and minimizing the competing

reactions from forming other crystals than ZnS.
