Abstract [en]

A tractor unit’s loadbearing structure consists of a truck frame made up of two longitudinal girders connected by a number of smaller transverse beams. For short chassis, there are problems with lack of space due to a large number of components between the girders. There are both mechanical and geometrical constraints that prevent the relocation of various systems. A new concept for a transverse beam with integrated compressed air tank have been developed where the focus was saving space and weight reduction.  This thesis is a continuation of a bachelor's work from 2014 where students analysed a concept for a transverse beam with integrated compressed air tank. Their results, in the form of an elliptical carbon fibre pipe with two end pieces of steel, was investigated further in order to obtain a basis for a future prototype. Using FE software, Abaqus, a new pipe geometry was analysed and different materials and designs were tested. Finally, a carbon fibre pipe of varying cross-section was presented where all the strength criteria by Hashin were met.  In order to mount the pipe in the framework two end-pieces of aluminium were designed. Bolted joints were constructed with threads in aluminium and threaded inserts to reduce drilling depth. The tube and the end caps are joined by an acrylate adhesive that prevents galvanic corrosion between the aluminium and carbon fiber. Tensions in aluminium and adhesives, and further analysis on the pipe was performed during virtual full truck simulations. No materials showed signs of incipient failure.  The new design holds about 20 litres and weighs 31 kg, which results in a weight reduction of 41 %. Materials cost was estimated to 1267 SEK.
