Abstract [en]
In 2014, India’s first net zero energy building was constructed and opened for a tour of the building. It was new of its kind and had adopted solar passive design and energy-efficient building materials. Since then, there has been much research about the area in order to make further progress and implement it on a larger scale. A drive towards a more sustainable building- and energy sector has been pushing for this development. Since 2017 a project at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Chennai has been conducted, specifically about Solar Energy Powered Net Zero Energy Smart Buildings. This thesis is a part of the project at IITM.
The aim of this project was to find the optimal design strategies and features of a Net Zero Energy Smart Building (NZESB) that is powered not only by solar power, but with wind as well. By using TRNSYS, a simulation tool, the energy calculations for the building were done. The output from renewable energy sources was also calculated, using weather data specific for Chennai. The study showed that for a small temporary
2residential building with a given area of 18.18 m , it was possible to achieve net zero when using both solar-
and wind power. Furthermore, the possibilities NZESBs in society and its implementation was explored by making a SWOT-analysis and analyzing the dynamics of the industrial development. The role of the NZESB in India was concluded to be important and it was deemed possible to implement these, but there are several threats and key barriers to keep in mind. This study has therefore shown that it is possible to achieve net zero energy on a single story temporary small building and that it is possible to implement these in India.
