Abstract [en]
Swedish "Mexi", a Diploma project offering a comprehensive analysis of the Swedish "Mexi" stone, a calcium-silicate brick, within the context of contemporary renovation in Sweden. Originating from a 1975 bungalow in Sollentuna, the project encompasses an extension and interior remodel, driven by a peaked, personal, obsession in Mexi stone. Widely used from the 1950s to the 1980s in Sweden, Mexi stones are now often viewed as inferior, resulting in historically significant architecture and sturdy houses, being demolished by economic or aesthetic reasons. The project involves collaboration with various experts to examine the stone's properties, challenges in reuse, and cultural significance. Despite obstacles such as the lack of CE-marking, the project proposes an innovative reuse initiative to demonstrate Mexi's potential in modern architecture, highlighting its distinctive qualities and aesthetic value. Through historical research, personal interviews, and architectural innovation, the project seeks to revive and repurpose Mexi stone in contemporary design.
