Abstract [en]
In designing a new bus and ferry terminal for Odda, a small industrial town in Norway, the aim is to create a space that bridges the town’s natural beauty and industrial heritage. Odda is surrounded by majestic landscapes of mountains, fjords, and a glacier, yet its appearance has been shaped by nearly 80 years of industrial production, resulting in several environmental damages. The design strategy intertwines the town’s natural and industrial elements, drawing inspiration from the contrast between the nearby glacier and Odda’s former smelting plant. This juxtaposition is reflected in the terminal’s design, featuring an organic, cantilevered roof and a blend of recycled materials that ties back to the town’s industrial era.The new terminal at the harbour site serves as a social hub, enhancing the waterfront area and restoring the spirit of “Almerket,” a place for everyone. It includes flexible waiting areas to accommodate seasonal changes in ridership, indoor and outdoor waiting spaces, and amenities for tourists and hikers. The lighting design, inspired by glacial forms and industrial furnaces, creates different atmospheres throughout the year. By repurposing the old site and integrating reused materials, the terminal not only provides a functional transit space but also reconnects the harbour with its tourist and industrial history.
