The goal of the study presented in this paper is to find a suitable direct-driven Surface Mounted Permanent Magnetmotor to replace an induction motor and its gearbox for an industrial application requiring 5 kW and 50 rpm. Thedesign process is first describedwith some discussion of the calculation of the flux density in the airgap. Distributedwindings with one slot per pole per phaseand concentratedwindings with fractional slot number per pole per phase, are then investigated. Itisshown that designs with a high number of poles, concentratedwindings and an irregular distribution of slots give the best performance.
