Abstract [en]

The current issue of migration on the shores of the Greek islands is an ongoing humanitarian crisis with numerous repercussions. This project addresses the need for social interaction between the refugees of Lesvos and the local population. This new community requires restructuring and proper channels of communication. My work aims to create meeting places for such a diverse public based on common ground and to bridge the existing gap by providing spaces of sharing and mutual exchange. The main focus is not the refugees themselves, but rather the local cultural upgrade, how current settings could be improved for the local community to simultaneously benefit the incoming refugees, especially when taking into consideration the ever-shifting change of the refugee population demographics and the economic crisis of Greece. As such, I decided to focus on 2 villages in the island interior, expanding and reorganizing existing infrastructure, which would be the staging ground not only for a local reformation, but also serve as a meeting platform of different people. I tried to optimize the currently available resources, and achieve maximum output, with little means. The introduction of new functions and creation of new conditions in the efficiently working sites does not undermine their previous character, but only enhances it.
