Abstract [en]

In this thesis I have used different methods from architecture and construction technologies to design a small neighborhood where emphasis is set on limiting the negative effect of weather as well as ensuring maximum availability of sunlight. The need to spend time outdoors in a socially sound environment has proven to be very important for human wellbeing, but is however too often neglected in the design of built environment.

The designed project is situated by the sea in my home town in Iceland, Reykjavík, which due to it‘s location in the middle of the atlantic ocean and lack of vegetation is extremely exposed to weather. The designed neighborhood has an emphasis on courtyards that provide outdoor potential for the inhabitants. The are big enough to allow plenty of sunlight but still provide shelter from wind. The houses are maximum four floors and bent, with facades that are not flat in order of breaking down the wind. The roofs of the houses are sloped in order of maximizing the sunlight.

This project is an example of how modern architecture can be used to enhance the wellbeing of inhabitants in harsh weather environments by creating sheltered outdoor areas.
