Abstract [en]

Today the student registration process at Red Cross University College (RKH) is manual which entails extra work for the institution’s faculty during the start of each semester. This thesis aims to explain and evaluate an automated and secure web registration service which was implemented in accordance to RKH’s needs. The web registration service is expected to handle sensitive information, therefore the traffic to and from the web registration service must be secure to prevent third parties from eavesdropping on the traffic or modifying its messages.

The project resulted in a web registration service prototype where students may login and authenticate themselves against a dummy federated login service (i.e. a trusted third party). On successful authentication and if the student is admitted into RKH, the student is granted a RKH specific account to be used on RKH’s online platform. All connections to and from the web registration service is protected by the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol in order to ensure confidentiality and integrity of messages sent as well as to provide authenticity of the communicating parties when required. The thesis concludes that a secure and automated registration process can indeed be implemented for RKH provided the TLS protocol is configured with care.

Röda Korsets Högskola (RKH) har idag en manuell studentregistreringsprocess vilket skapar mycket extra arbeta under terminsstarter. Syftet med rapporten är att presentera och utvärdera en prototyp av en automatiserad studentregistreringsprocess, som utvecklades i enlighet med Röda Korsets Högskolas behov. Prototypen måste vara säker så ingen tredje part kan komma åt information om studenten under registreringsprocessen.

Resultatet för projektet är en hemsida där studenter kan logga in och autentiserar sig med hjälp av en dummy federerad login tjänst(inloggning med hjälp av en pålitlig tredje part). Om inloggningen lyckas och studenten är antagen till RKH, skapas ett konto till studenten och dess inloggningsuppgifter visas på hemsidan. All kommunikation skyddas av Transport Layer Securtiy (TLS) protokollet, därmed kan ingen tredje part komma åt information om studenten. Slutsatser som kan dras utifrån resultatet är att det går att automatisera studentregistreringsprocessen, därmed minska arbetet under terminsstarter. Så länge TLS används korrekt kan man se till att ingen tredje part kan få information om studenten under registreringsprocessen.
