Eyes Beyond Vision: Spatial Perception Through Senses

Abstract [en]

We understand the world around us through our vision, through the images that we perceive and create with our eyes. Most of the spaces and built environments are designed in order to satisfy that sense. However, there are people with limited or no vision who are still using the same spaces, spaces that do not address other senses than the vision. How visually impaired people can understand and use the surrounded environment without having a visual memory of it?

The main objective of this thesis project is to explore the physical and psychological needs of blind and low vision people and use architecture as a tool to support these needs. Moreover, this project aims to familiarize people with the needs of visually impaired people and prove that the visual qualities are only one part of the whole when then the creation of a space is oriented by sensory design. The perception of the built and the surrounding environment is achieved not only by the sight but also through the combination of all the other senses. The suggested project is aiming to create a space that provides a variety of stimulus for all the senses, like hearing, smell or touch and it will constitute a comfortable and rich in experiences environment for all the users.
