Abstract [en]

Organizational Project Management Maturity Level represents project management practices and organizational capabilities. The higher Project Management Maturity (PMML) is, the better organizational performance is. Constant growth in the demand for energy producing services induced energy-oriented organizations to increase capabilities in order to ensure competitive advantage. Awareness of PMML in the related organizations will be a reference point to make strategic decisions to encounter changes in the business environment. There are research works, which studied PMML in different industrial sectors. However, there is no or little attention is given to Organizational Project Management Maturity Level of the energy sector. To resolve the research problem, this thesis focused on answering the following research question: what is PMML in energy related organizations? In addition, it is intended to determine what is the difference between PMML in energy industry and other industries?

The study was carried out using questionnaire as data collection method. The questionnaire was designed based on Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3) developed by Project Management Institute. Two groups of responders answered the questionnaire: experts, having OPM3 professional certification and working experience in energy related organizations, and organizational managers, having at least basic knowledge in project management discipline. According to the questionnaire results, energy related organizations have low intermediate PMML. Namely, organizations follow only basic processes of project management (PM) discipline and not all processes are standardized. Even if PM processes are standardized, the standards are not applied appropriately. Besides, the results showed no significant difference in PPML between organizations in energy industry and other industries. Although currently energy related organizations have low intermediate PPML, they adopt modern PM techniques to increase PPML in the future and to improve organizational performance.
