Risks associated with implementation of Knowledge Management Systems: Identification and assessment of the risks in China

Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) are considered as a series of information systems which are designed to manage organizational knowledge. Interest in knowledge management systems is rising at a fast pace due to the increasing importance in regards to knowledge as the key organizational asset. As a kind of software project, it results in a host of new questions since it stands for a new type of management challenge and presents new risk factors which must be treated differently. Hence, this thesis aims at identifying, assessing and analyzing potential risks that Chinese companies may encounter when implementing knowledge management systems.

As a result of a critical literature study and telephone interviews, 51 predefined KMS risks are established and classified into four categories. They are then identified and ranked based on their mean values of likelihood and mean values of impact after analyzing the feedbacks from questionnaires that were answered by KMS project practitioners in China. 43 risk factors are identified, among which 14 are critical risks. This research confirms that the failure of KMS implementation project could not just be simply attributed to the technologies/tools and technical infrastructures, but the majority of difficult-to-manage risks are found in people and management aspects.
