Abstract [en]

The braking of an aircraft is one of the most important parts of the flight. The temperature of the brake could exceed 600°C during a classic brake cycle and 2000°C during a rejected take-off, where the plane has to stop at its maximum velocity and maximum weight. In this last case, the brake catches fire. The cooling of the brake appears to be an important issue to consider, and with this in mind, engineers from the company Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, world leader in aircraft landing and braking systems and entity of Safran (a French multinational aircraft engine, rocket engine, aerospace-component and security company), imagined passive cooling solutions to add to the brake. A thermal study of these solutions is conducted in this report to show their impact on the brake cooling, where methodology and difficulties encountered are exposed. Finally, a comparison between the different solutions will lead to the choice of the most appropriate to the brake cooling issue. As those systems may be subject to patent, any details, sketches or printouts shall not be disclosed in this report and will be kept confidential.
