Frustrated Magnets and Violation of the Third Lawof Thermodynamics

Abstract [en]

Frustrated antiferromagnets can be found in simple lattice structures such as the twodimensional triangular lattice, and seem to imply that there is a aw in the fundamental third law of thermodynamics as it was formulated by Max Planck. Using the Ising model to describe square and triangular lattices, we evaluate the entropy at absolute zero both analytically and numerically, using an exact method as well as Monte-Carlo simulations.  We show that the antiferromagnetic triangular lattice indeed has a residual entropy due to its degenerate ground state, and that Planck's formulation of the law therefore should not be used.
