Abstract [en]

In this thesis the Jarzynski equality will be investigated. First the theory behind the theorem, both from a thermodynamics and statistical physics perspective will be covered. Afterwards a simulation where the Jarzynski equality is put to the test is performed to finally end up in a comparison between this fluctuation theorem and the second law of thermodynamics. With the simulation, it is investigated for when, for a finite time and a finite number of runs, the Jarzynski equality is still applicable. This by calculating the free energy difference both with the theorem and analytically for comparison.

I denna avhandling kommer Jarzynski likheten att undersökas. Först kommer teori både från termodynamik och statistik fysik att gås igenom. Med syfte att jämföra denna fluktuationssats och termodynamikens andra lag, utförs därefter simuleringar där Jarzynski likheten testas. Med simuleringarna undersöks det när, för en ändlig tid och ett begränsat antal körningar, denna likhet fortfarande är tillämpbar. Den fria energidifferensen beräknas både teoretiskt och analytiskt för jämförelse.
