Abstract [en]

Civic dialogues (Medborgardialoger in Swedish) represent a process of exchange of views, ideas, comments and knowledge established through the conversation between citizens and municipal and political representatives. The dialogues´ main intention is to capture these contributions allowing the citizens to exert different degrees of influence on public decision. Systematization and inclusion in the governance process is an important objective in terms of both social sustainability and environment, giving the citizens the opportunity to influence the development of the city they live in. Participation is a core aspect civic dialogues deal with, fundamental for their scope. At the same time, in the Swedish context it is possible to see several different tendencies that show how despite all the available opportunities and tools for participation, participation levels remain not satisfactorily high enough. The objective of this research paper is to explore the reasons behind participation in civic dialogues in the context of the construction, in order to use the results obtained to improve these public processes in order to involve citizens in the city development process more effectively. From a methodological perspective, this study combines quantitative methods and a broad literature review on the topic of participation, including public, online and survey participation literature. The creation of a questionnaire to collect data on citizens living in the county of Stockholm is followed by multivariate data analysis (principal component analysis), that allows discovering what the fundamental dimensions that trigger participation measured by the survey are. The findings present four main reasons behind participation in civic dialogues and analyses the data collected from the questionnaire respondents to shed further light on the differences along socioeconomic characteristics.
