Abstract [en]

In this thesis the theory of the Hofstadter spectrum is examined. Experimental observations of the spectrum are considered. The spectrum is calculated numerically in Matlab and characteristic features of the generated graph of the spectrum are analyzed. The results show that the expected self-similar recursive pattern in the spectrum is prominent. Features related to the quantum Hall effect can be seen in the Matlab plot of the spectrum.

Abstract [sv]

I denna uppsats undersöks teorin om Hofstadterspektrum. Experimentella försök att påvisa spektrumet studeras. Spektrumet beräknas numeriskt i Matlab och utmärkande drag hos den genererade grafen av spektrumet analyseras. Resultaten visar att det förväntade rekursiva mönstret hos spektrumet är tydligt. Egenskaper relaterade till den kvantiserade Halleffekten kan aven ses i grafen av spektrumet.
