Abstract [en]

In 1948, Hendrik Casimir predicted the Casimir effect, an almost negligible at- tractive force between two perfectly conducting parallel plates. Since then, major advancements have been made. This report gives an overview of some of these ad- vancements, as well as the theoretical background of the Casimir effect. The Casimir effect has been calculated for several different shapes as well as dimensions, such as between two perfectly conducting plates in any given dimension, the rectangular box, the spherical shell, the sphere and the plane, and two different hollow spheres. Var- ious corrections to the Casimir effect have also been calculated in order to account for non-zero temperature as well as imperfect conductors. The Casimir effect has also been experimentally verified, with varying error margins. In terms of practical application, none have yet been achieved, even 70 years after its discovery, but the potential applications are very interesting.

År 1948 förutspådde Hendrik Casimir Casimireffekten, en nästan försumbar attraktivkraft mellan två perfekt ledande parallella plattor. Sedan dess har det gjortsstora framsteg inom fältet. Den här rapporten ger en översiktlig bild om dessaframsteg, tillsammans med en grundläggande teoretisk bakgrund av Casimireffekten.Casimireffekten har blivit beräknad för flera geometrier och dimensioner, somtill exempel tvåperfekt ledande plattor, en rektangulär låda och två ihåliga sfäriskaskal. Olika korrektioner till Casimir effekten, bland annat för nollskild temperaturoch icke perfekt ledande material, har även blivit beräknade. Casimireffekten harblivit experimentellt verifierad. Ingen praktiskt använding av Casimireffekten är hittilsfunnen, 70 år efter dess upptäckt, men de potentiella applikationerna är ytterstintressanta.
