How do biogas technologies disseminate? A review of innovation system drivers

Abstract [en]

Biogas as an energy carrier plays an important role in low carbon energy transition. However, in some countries biogas technologies are just beginning to be used, while in others a mature stage has been reached. Such heterogeneous development raises the fundamental question: what are the driving forces behind the biogas dissemination? There is a need to improve the understanding of the system strengths in oder to predict the biogas dissemination as well as to assess their subsequent impact on the energy industry as a whole. In order to adress this, an in-depth analysis of drivers within a biogas technological innovation system (TIS) was made, followed by a multiple case analysis and an explanation of the impact of each TIS system functions. This leads to a proposal of comprehensive typology and categorisation of biogas drivers.
