Abstract [en]

Detroit is a city in transformation. It is the largest city in U.S history to file for bankruptcy and since 1950 it has lost more than half of its population and is continuously shrinking. The city has been described as “the Motor City” and “the City that Put America on Wheels”. But also as “a Museum of Neglect” and having gone from “America’s purest fulfillment to America’s most epic failure”. Suburbanization, deindustrialization and demographic changes are the main forces behind Detroit’s rapid movement from prosperity to decay, and the city is now often referred to as a “Donut City” by urban planners. The American donut, a sugary ring with an empty centre, acts as an apt metaphor for the wealthy suburbs around a collapsed inner city.
