Abstract [en]

Longtang, also known as Shanghai alleys, refers to an urban community that centered on a lane or several interconnected lanes. It has been massively built in the city from 1850s to 1960s, as a solution for the house shortage problem. During the process, the form of Longtang community has been changed several times to adapt to new demands of citizens. Nowadays, the housing issue appears again and influences every people’s life. The purpose of my project is to take the old Longtang alleys as a reference, and by studying people’s co-living behavior in such high density spaces, trying to find out strategies to make life better for people who have difficulties to afford an ideal house on thier own. The project will be on a site where an old Longtang has recently been taken down, and can be regarded as a new Longtang community adapt for today’s situation.
