Abstract [en]

To accomplish fast electromechanical switching devices for commutation of load currents in a controllable electric power grid there is a need for super fast mechanical actuators. Here, results are reported of theoretical and experimental investigations of the use of so-called Thomson coils to attain required accelerations. Three different set-ups have been compared; double-sided coils with six and ten turns and a single-sided coil with nine turns. All coils are wound with enamelled copper wire with a diameter of 0.7 mm and an average coil radius chosen to 9 mm. The performed study has shown that Thomson coils are feasible for a wide range of applications. For each application it is possible to optimize the Thomson coil with respect to the performance desired both in the choice of coil and the design of the drive circuit providing the energy.
