Abstract [en]

The assignment was to replace the already existing town hall on the south side of the central square in Nynäshamn. The square is located at the end of the main pedestrian street and is of a closed character. The existing town hall docks to both the community house on its west side and to the boards’ house on its right. The south side of the site is facing Floragatan, another main street in the city.

My ambition is to create new connections between the square and Floragatan. Four robust, parallel walls accentuate this direction and constitutes the structure for the building. The walls possess the serving functions for the building’s program and this frees the negative space in between them. Structurally these walls serve as the main load bearing elements, allowing large column free spaces, openings in floor and a variety of ceiling heights. It creates a permeable open structure, a space of public exchange where life can flow.

The public space continues from the square into the building and creates a contection to the in other cases closed, political rooms. This is to create an encounter between the common citizen and the authority. A space where one can put the politcans against wall, or perhaps in this case in a wall.

The stereotomical walls guides the visitors through the building, in time and space. A rhythm of light and darkness, openness and shrouding.Through the interweaving of serving and served spaces, and the calibration of openings and thresholds, the space gains tension.
