The Metaphysics of the Drawing

Abstract [en]

In writings addressing the essential role of the drawing to the architect’s profession the drawing is mainly treated as a tool for communication, and the act of drawing as a method, stating the drawing’s vital potency of expressing the intelligible Form of the building. Even though the intelligible creation of the drawing is in some sense implied in the writings it is still vaguely explained, appearing self-evident. And yet, if the architectural drawing is of such great importance to the idea of the architect’s role and the making of architecture, shouldn’t we try to understand the drawing just as well as we try to understand architecture? Just like the physical building is preceded by the intelligible Form of the building the physical drawing is preceded by the Form of the drawing. Thesis / Task What is the metaphysic of the architectural drawing, and attached to this question; what is the purpose of it, and with it, the purpose of the Architect? The task consist of two parts in this matter: The argument – This gap between the Form of the building and the architectural drawing is looked closer into in the written paper entitled The Metaphysics of the Drawing where a theoretical and historical background is given and main concepts defined and further developed in the analysis and discussion through the works by Piranesi and Brodsky and Utkin. The reflection through application – Parts of the research is supported by investigative sketches and etchings while the main application is through the physical production of a drawing, facilitating as a platform for reflection upon the theoretical statement. Objective / Purpose The objective of this thesis is to develop an argument about the drawing’s metaphysics and the purpose of this is to contribute to the discussion about the role, and purpose of the Architect, and to open up for a discussion about what our representations actually are.
