The Incubator: Where city expansion meets bright ideas and production
KTH, School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE), Architecture.
2019 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The thesis explore how to cultivate the relationship between industry, production and city. Studying a part of the Ulvsunda industrial area, north-west of Stockholm city centre, it looks at how we can create new spaces for production in the city and protect them from losing their function, even with the looming pressure of residential developments on its doorstep. At the moment the area of interest is protected from this and continues to survive here since its proximity to Bromma Airport poses severe restrictions for residential developments - at least for now. The location of the plot makes it ideal to bridge the opposing worlds of city and industrial area and create an exchange between the two. By targeting smaller businesses and start-ups in need of space to grow step by step the idea is to provide a sort of mini-campus for product developers and manufacturers where they can share a larger pool of resources and services. Here, new ideas can be tested and allowed to grow in a more forgiving environment - a sort of incubator for business and industrial ideas. ”The Incubator” project will provide private spaces for everyday work and larger, flexible spaces, workshops and meeting rooms available when needed. This allows for an effective use of the limited resources available.
