Abstract [en]

Indoor and outdoor, walled and boundary-blurring, retroscapes have been explored in many forms, from high-tech, highstim Niketown to the pseudoquaint country stores of heritage park mainstreets. The mobilization of utopian and paradisal discourse in marketing research contexts has evoked visions of nostalgic futures, futuristic pasts, and an expulsion from the Garden of Eden as Adam and Eve succumb to carnal knowledge of the banana (Brown 2000). In theological terms, paradise is the ideal state. In marketing terms, Hawaii might be considered the ideal state. Through the lens of paradise, the relationship between retroscapes and the ideal state of Hawaii becomes clear.
