There are substantial similarities in how value statements are applied to chemistry and technology. Both disciplines are subject to negative moral valuations due to the harmful effects of some of their products. In addition, instrumental value statements of a specific type, namely category-specified value statements, are used in both areas. Examples are “a bad engine” and “a good stabilizer”. In both cases this usage is based on functional descriptions that relate to the design component of the respective discipline. However, there are also important differences in how such value statements are applied in chemistry and in technology. The similarities and differences are investigated, and it is concluded that additional studies along these lines can contribute to our understanding of both disciplines.
