Abstract [en]

Water pollution caused by recalcitrant organic molecules from industrial and domestic sectors has become a major problem that can affect human health and the balance of our ecosystem. Fenton oxidation process based on the generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (.OH) is one of the most efficient methods to overcome this issue. However, this process has three significant limitations such as the narrow working pH range, the formation of iron sludge, and the nonreuse of iron catalyst. To overcome these shortcomings, the use of heterogeneous photo-Fenton process is widely recommended. This chapter reviews the main advances in heterogeneous photo-Fenton oxidation and especially the use of chelating agents such as nitrilotriacetic acid, ethylenediamine-N, N’-disuccinic acid, and oxalate C2O4 2- as a promising solution to enhance the degradation efficiency of refractory organic pollutants.
