Urbaniseringstrenden de senaste decennierna har lett till att bostadsbebyggelse koncentrerats främst till Sveriges storstadsregioner och större städer. Anledningen är att ett stort utbud av arbeten och utbildningar men även upplevelser och kulturliv finns där. En tät och blandad stad med närhet mellan bostad och olika funktioner har varit trenden framför allt sedan 2000-talet. För att lyckas skapa attraktiva boendemiljöer för människor ställs höga krav på stads- planeringen. Genom att stadsutveckling sker genom förtätning hävdas hållbarheten i staden på bästa vis främjas.

Syftet med denna studie är att redogöra för innebörden av förtätning som begrepp, hur väl planeringsidealet förhåller sig till hållbar utveckling samt om stadsplanerare även i framtiden bör sträva efter att förtäta våra städer. För att inte riskera att överplanera i en riktning är det av vikt att ifrågasätta och studera pågående ideal inom stadsutveckling. För att uppnå syftet har en kvalitativ forskningsmetod tillämpats. En allmän litteraturstudie genomfördes för att besvara frågan om innebörden av förtätning som begrepp och en systematisk litteraturstudie tillämpades för att besvara huruvida planeringsidealet förhåller sig till hållbar utveckling. I syfte att skapa en fördjupad förståelse för planeringsidealet genomfördes intervjuer med tjänstepersoner inom stadsplanering.

Studien har visat att förtätningen som stadsbyggnadsstrategi har positiva effekter främst på ekonomisk och ekologisk hållbarhet. Hur sociala faktorer om människors hälsa påverkas är mer diffust. Från denna slutsats finns dock undantag. Studien resulterar i en definition av förtätning som en strategi för stadsutveckling inom en stads nuvarande gränser, i syfte att nyttja mark yteffektiv och skapa en stad där allt finns på nära håll. Gällande framtiden tycks förtätning vara det bästa alternativet vid stadsutveckling för att främja en hållbar utveckling, under förutsättning att det planeras på rätt sätt.

The trend towards urbanization over the past decades has led to a concentration of residential development mainly in Sweden's metropolitan regions and major cities. The reason is that a wide range of jobs and education, as well as experiences and cultural life are available there. The trend since the 2000s has been towards a dense, mixed-use development with close proximity between housing and urban functions. To succeed in creating attractive living environments for people, high demands are placed on urban planning. Urban development with densification is the best way to promote the sustainability of the city.

The aim of this study is to explain the meaning of densification as a concept, how well the planning ideal relates to sustainable development and whether urban planners should continue to strive for densification in our cities in the future. In order to avoid the risk of over-planning in one direction, it is important to question and study current ideals in urban development. A qualitative research method was used to fulfill the work. A general literature review was conducted to answer the question of the meaning of densification as a concept and a systematic literature review was applied to answer whether the planning ideal relates to sustainable development. In order to get a deeper insight of the planning ideal, interviews were conducted with professionals in urban planning.

The study has shown that densification as an urban planning strategy has positive effects mainly on economic and ecological sustainability. However, the impact of social factors on human health is more diffuse. However, there are exceptions to this conclusion. The study results in a definition of densification as a strategy for urban development within a city's current boundaries, where the aim is to use land space efficiently and create a city where everything is close at hand. Regarding the future, the study concluded that densification is the best option for urban development to promote sustainable development, provided that it is properly planned.
