Abstract [en]
Pavement on foot and cycle paths significantly affect rolling resistance and howcyclists experience cycling. Nowadays, the number of single accidents is enormousfor both pedestrians and cyclists. In 2020, 681 single accidents with bicycles werereported, which is one of the most common types of accidents in Stockholm. A totalof 1,059 people was injured in a single accident, one of whom died. Bicycle singleaccidents have been among the three most common types of accidents for almost adecade, which can lead to a problem in road safety. The goal today is for the numberof seriously injured to be reduced by at least 25% in 2030 according to a governmentdecision (2020).
The purpose of this degree project is to produce the requirements’ specifications thatcan be applied for evaluation of pedestrian and cycle path pavements and forassessment of the materials' commercial viability. The result of the degree projectmust be able to determine whether these requirements specifications that have beenproduced can form the basis for fall-friendly materials.
The work focused on a literature study where relevant published reports and textswere studied. Subsequently, data was collected from various municipalities' technicalmanuals and the Swedish Transport Administration's published documents, whichwere presented in the form of a table for the various materials included in thepavement for pedestrian and cycle paths. There are certain ranges of parameters forthe materials such as soft point and penetration index to achieve the propertiesrequired in walking and cycling paths. To find out various technical aspects, severalinterviews were conducted with municipalities for different regions.
Results showed that it is possible that fall-friendly materials used in sports facilitiesand playgrounds meet the demanding properties of cycle paths, however, requirements specifications for existing materials cannot be transferred to fall-friendlymaterials.
