The project is an off-grid home located in Fljótavík, a bay in the far north-west corner of Hornstrandir nature reserve, in the Westfjords region of Iceland.Fljótavík was inhabited from 1700 until 16. June 1946 when the remaining 22 people left the bay. The reasons were various, but mostly because of how harsh and deserted the location is; especially in the winter. Since 1946, people with relation to the bay have stayed there over the summer months in tents and restored or newly built cottages. The project seeks to solve an all-year off-grid home located in this deserted location. It features a highly insulated and energy-efficient passive house, a winter greenhouse, a sauna, and a hiker’s cabin for summer use. Electricity is produced locally from a stream close to the buildings with the help of a small turbine, securing them with fresh water and energy for electricity and heating.
