Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Sweden is one of the countries in the world with the highest electricity consumption per capita and during the past year electricity prices have risen significantly. There is an ongoing debate in Sweden concerning the reasons for these price increases and one of the most mentioned ones is Sweden’s electricity connections with other northern European countries.

This paper discusses how these international connections impact the price of electricity and the electricity market in Sweden. It also includes the made up scenario where Sweden cuts off all international electricity trades and discusses what effects that would have on the price of electricity and the Swedish electricity market.

The result was that electricity export increases the price of electricity while electricity import decreases it. Since Sweden exports more than it imports the international cables affect the price of electricity negatively.

The analysis of an isolated Swedish electricity market showed the importance of trade with other countries. Without import and export of electricity the will to invest in Swedish electricity production decreases, while an isolated Swedish market is technically possible it would not be socio-economically profitable.
