Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the economic and environmental costs caused byrenovations in bathrooms damaged by moisture/water. This study focuses mainly on detachedhouses and holiday cottages influenced by Swedish environmental conditions.Moisture and water damages are an increasing problem, each year there are hundreds ofthousands reports to insurance companies regarding these problems. This can be avoided byidentifying and resolving the problem in an early stage, saving time, health, environmentaland economic damages. The data used in this study is reported by Vattenskadecentrum in their annual report regardingwater and moisture damages in Sweden. Polygon AK supplies different damage scenarios, renovations scenarios and estimated costs. Polygon supplies the study with 3 differentbathrooms each with different walls and foundational structures, which in total equals 6different scenarios that have been analyzed. All bathrooms have a floor area of 8 squaremeters. BM (Byggsektorns miljöberäkningsverktyg) is used to calculate the carbon dioxideemission. The carbon emission produced by transport and dehumidification is calculatedthrough a separate excel document with data from the energy authority which are based onthe fuel, weight of material and choice of transportation. The renovations had an average carbon dioxide emission of 649 kg per renovation whichequals 81 kg CO2e per square meter. The material is responsible for 64% of the pollution, thetransportation for 23% and dehumidification for 13%. In total the renovations released 26 377tons of carbon dioxide in the year 2021.
