The Google Effect and how different information mediums affect learning (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The Internet is becoming a bigger part of our lives with each passing day. Our relationship with the internet is developing more and more into symbiosis, where one of the effects of this is that we become dependent on the available information that the internet offers. In 2011, the concept of the Google Effect was first studied, which describes the tendency to forget easily accessible information, simply because there is quick access to it. The result of the availability of the internet and the human tendency to forget easily accessible information, is that we today remember less than before. This is at least what the Google Effect theory proposes. In this study, it was investigated whether the ease of access to the internet means that students in Media Technology remember googled study material less than the corresponding printed material. The context being that of studying before an exam. This was examined by dividing eleven participants into two groups, where both groups had to answer twelve questions. The difference between the two groups was that one group was allowed to use Google as an aid to answer the questions, while the other group was given a printed compendium on the topic. The day after the test day, the participants had to answer the same questions once more, but this time without aid. Then, the number of remembered answers for each participant was counted from day one to day two, and differences between the two groups were analyzed. The results obtained in the study found no indication of differences between the two groups. That is, this study could not demonstrate that there is any difference in learning between the two different mediums when it comes to memory. The study was thus unable to demonstrate the Google effect. This result suggests that it is possible that you are free to choose which of these learning tools you want, without fear of reduced recall. Further research on the subject is however required before this can be confirmed.
