Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to develop a methodology for the static strength and failure mode simulation of hot-driven riveted joints. The purpose was to be able to accurately estimate a rivet joints static strength behaviour and its failure mode without relying on experiments in order to save both time and resources during the design of joints. The non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling framework considered the rivet joints configurations and geometry, the material properties of the plate and the rivet as well as the clamping force of the hot-driven rivet. Using experimental data from literature the modelling framework is validated. It is shown that the modelling framework can capture the shear strength behaviour of different configurations of rivet joints as well as predict four different failure modes in the joint. Those failure modes being: rivet shear failure, bearing at the rivet hole of the plate and, failure in the net section of the plate. The effect of the clamping force from the rivet was investigated. It could be seen that the strength of the joint increased with the increase in clamping force.
