A Study on the Need for Structure and Modelling of Databases : Ad Hoc Databases in the Financial Industry: A Case Study and an Analysis (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The report begins with a literature review that discusses different database solutions and trends in data storage. In addition to this, the report also presents challenges facing the financial industry. The initial study shows how the research question is relevant to society in general and the financial industry. A case study has been conducted at the insurance company SPP, where part of their sustainability data has been stored in an ad hoc database. The ad hoc database is unstructured and a possible alternative to this, a prototype database, is presented. A comparative analysis between the two implementations is then presented. They are analysed on parameters such as execution speed, data integrity, complexity, and the possibility of automation. The results of the case study show that the ad hoc database causes long-term problems for the company, such as difficulties in managing and integrating data. The results also show that the ad hoc database has higher execution speed in some cases but has low data integrity and lacks further possibilities for automation. An important conclusion is to carefully consider which criteria that should guide future implementations.
