Climate-enhanced concrete elements : The impact of concrete standards and climate declarations on the carbon footprint of structural suppliers (English)
Abstract [en]

In 2021, the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) published an updated version of the Swedish concrete standard SS 137003. The new revised version makes it possible for concrete producers to include larger amounts of alternative binders other than Portland cement in the concrete mix. The revision included an increase in the k-factor, allowing for greater combination of fly ash and blast furnace slag. This led to a significant step for the Swedish concrete industry in reducing its carbon footprint. On January 1, 2022, Sweden introduced the law of Climate Declaration, requiring a calculation of the climate impact of buildings during the construction phase. Consequently, product suppliers have been compelled to deliver Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for their products to report their carbon footprint. An EPD consists of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and a Product Category Rule (PCR). To enable comparison of EPDs from different suppliers, it is necessary for them to be based on the same version of the PCR standard, SS-EN 15804.The report has given a broader perspective on climate work and its future development in Sweden through interviews with four different individuals who are performing different task assignments. Those people possess great insight from different angles in their daily work, where client perspective, supplier experience, standardization process and quality certification are their expertise. The report includes a comparison of three different precast concrete structural elements from five different suppliers active in the Swedish construction market. The suppliers are Pekabex from Poland, Inhus from Lithuania, as well as the Swedish suppliers Byggelement, Abetong, and Strängbetong. The results indicate that the Swedish company Byggelement shows the lowest climate impact in the comparison, and they actively work towards continuously updating their products and EPDs to reduce their carbon footprint.
