Digital tools for a safer construction industry : A study on the use of AR and VR as tools to increase safety in the construction industry (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality(VR) technologies as tools to enhance safety in the construction industry. The aim of thisresearch is to investigate the potential benefits, challenges, and opportunities associatedwith the use of AR and VR in improving the work environment for construction workers. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a comprehensive literaturereview with interviews conducted with industry professionals who have experienceworking with VR technology. The research addresses research questions around how ARand VR technologies can be used to increase the safety of workers in the constructionindustry, and what the potential opportunities and challenges are in implementing thesetechnologies to improve the working environment. The findings highlight that bothAR and VR have significant potential for improving safety in construction by enablingenhanced risk identification, training, and spatial visualization. However, the adoption ofthese technologies faces challenges such as technical barriers, change management, andthe need for user-friendly and integrated systems. The study concludes by emphasizingthe importance of considering the availability, user friendliness, and knowledge transferin the implementation of AR and VR technologies. Future research should focus onexploring specific applications, cost-effectiveness, and long-term impacts of AR and VRas tools for increased safety in the construction industry.
