Abstract [sv]

Intervjuerna spelades in, bearbetades och kodades.

Abstract [en]

Intercultural communication is the communication between people of different cultures. The term culture can mean different things. This work is focused on national culture. Cultural differences can lead to difficulties in communication and misunderstandings can arise. The purpose of this study was to investigate if knowledge about intercultural communication affects the product development process in multinational industrial companies. The study also aimed to investigate what types of issues can arise when this type of knowledge is lacking. The work was based on a literature study and an empirical study. The literature study was used as a foundation for the problem statement and the literature review. The empirical study was based on four interviews with representatives from the same company. In addition to the four interviews, an educator for the company was also asked questions, but this interview was only via mail. The interviews were recorded, processed and coded. The results from the empirical study were then analyzed and compared with the literature from the literature review. The conclusion is that intercultural communication has an effect on the product development process. It can have a positive impact on innovation but also negatively affect problem solving within a multicultural team. It could also be determined that a lack of knowledge in the subject can lead to misunderstanding and conflict between colleagues and also lead to less engagement in work.
