Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the possibility of increasing digital literacy in the rural communities of Mozambique through the implementation of a digital learning tool. The study was conducted in collaboration with the non-profit organization Project Vita with the aim of creating higher living standards for the people of Mozambique. An internet learning tool was created using human-computer interaction. Basing the method on interaction design, the main user requirements were identified and tested during workshops, surveys and interviews. The results indicate that an online learning tool is effective in increasing digital literacy to a certain extent, but certain requirements are essential for it to be effective. It is important for the learning tool to be simple in both design and content, and that a teacher is necessary to teach how to use the computer’s hardware. Additionally, interviews with key stakeholders were conducted to identify key findings on how digital literacy can impact socioeconomic development. The most critical findings were that an increased digital literacy could improve the community’s education, skill building, communication and globalization.
