Abstract [en]

The future of industrial sites and people who work there is increasingly uncertain due to rapidly changing economic conditions. Zygmunt Bauman's theory of "liquid modernity" emphasizes the need for flexibility in this context, since those who cannot adapt to quickly changing global structures risk being left behind and uncertain about their future. Industrial sites with rigid layouts and structures exacerbate the problem by being unable to easily accommodate change. As a result, communities working in these sites are at an even higher risk of stagnation and insecurity.

To address these challenges, an urban design project has been proposed at a Steel Mill plant located in Nowa Huta, Cracow, which is on the brink of closure, threatening the livelihoods of many workers. The project envisions a flexible and adaptable design that can adjust to fast-changing global conditions and quickly flowing capital. Inspired by Bauman's ideas, the project aims to create resilient and sustainable spaces, even in times of economic uncertainty, while fostering a sense of community among people involved in the daily life of the industrial site.
