Improving Cell-ID Localization using Topographic Elevation

Abstract [en]

This essay explores the possibility of improving Cell-ID localization in cellular networks by considering topographic elevation to limit the range of cell tower antennas, and thereby decrease the area of the cells corresponding to each CellID. A line-of-sight algorithm is implemented and analyzed as a potential solution. It is concluded that the algorithm is insufficient for an accurate representation of the true span of a cell. To create a reliable solution for future work in the area, the algorithm would need to be modified to account for the curvature of the Earth, and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation of radio waves.

Denna uppsats utforskar möjligheten att förbättra lokaliseringsmetoden CellID i mobilnätverk genom att ta hänsyn till topografisk höjd för att begränsa räckvidden för mobilmastantenner och därmed minska området av cellerna som motsvarar varje Cell-ID. En siktlinjealgoritm implementeras och analyseras som en potentiell lösning. Slutsatsen är att algoritmen inte är tillräcklig för en korrekt representation av cellers verkliga räckvidd. För att skapa en pålitlig lösning för framtida arbete inom området behöver algoritmen modifieras för att ta hänsyn till jordens krökning och icke-siktlinjes-utbredning (NLOS) av radiovågor.
