Abstract [en]

The genesis of my thesis lies in the exploration of the development possibilities for Kallis in Visby—asea bathhouse that encompasses a restaurant with an after-beach operational for a few weeksin summer, complemented by a smaller sauna and essential facilities like changing rooms andtoilets. My overarching goal has been to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of how this space isutilized and delve into the potential conditions for enhancing the sea bath. The ultimate aim is topresent a well-thought-out proposal for on-site development. In the project’s initial stages, I had outlined a specific program for the location. However, as Iprogressed, I made a deliberate choice to deviate from the original plan, eager to see where theproject would organically lead me.Venturing into territory largely unfamiliar to me, I initiated my exploration with sauna sessions andcold bathing. This hands-on approach has proven to be an enlightening experience, providing mewith valuable insights into the intricacies of these activities.Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, there emerged a heightened interest in coldbathing. Fueled by its outdoor nature, this activity transformed into a social pursuit embraced byan increasing number of individuals, particularly on Gotland.Zooming out to a broader perspective, the impetus for this project is rooted in my personal connectionto the place and a deep-seated interest in fostering a vibrant city throughout the year.Gotland, as a locale, has grappled with the enduring challenge of sustaining the vitality of itsurban center. The backdrop of increased interest rates and ferry prices has cast a shadow on thecity’s allure for visitors. Summers see a bustling city, while winters render many spaces desolate. This ebb and flow in demand and supply have resulted in the closure of businesses during thelow season. The challenge extends beyond the economic realm and permeates public spaces—afocal point in the ongoing project. As I explore the potential development of Kallis, it becomes partof a larger narrative addressing the cyclical dynamics impacting urban spaces and the quest foryear-round vibrancy.
